The pesky phone would ring as he was in the middle of typing a report. Marquez checked the screen. Jessup, in Alabama. Marquez chose to answer, rather than needing to listen to voice mail later.

“The other day, you asked about a set of Alabama plates,”Jessup said, “and now I have an answer for you. They were registered to a Mr. Digby Green for a green Ford F250, the 2007 model.”

“Thanks, that’s helpful. Mr. Green switched his plates for ones from a truck here in Roseland.” From the other end of the line, Marquez heard Jessup’s disapproving tut-tut. “You’re telling me,” he agreed.

“One more thing,” Jessup said. “There are only three dentists in this town, so we’ve got a match for that corpse we dug up. Mrs. Hazel Green, aged 67, from our fair city.”

“Hazel Green under a witch hazel bush, and Digby Green… mother and son,” Marquez muttered. “Your people didn’t through some miracle get prints off that busted shovel, did they?”

“Nothing.”

Marquez sighed. “Too much to hope for, I suppose. Still, those license plates prove he crossed state lines. One of us’ll have to call the Bureau.”

“Our case happened first. I’ll do it.”

“Thanks. I’ll put out an alert to our boys and the Indiana State troopers. Maybe we’ll catch him before the Bureau men show up.”

“Wouldn’t that be good.” Jessup ended the call.

Marquez turned back to his computer, and triggered the message system application.

B.O.L., he typed. Be on the lookout for a green 2007 Ford F250, currently with Indiana plates. The driver, Digby Green, is a murder suspect. Approach with extreme caution.

He clicked SEND.

Light flared off the restaurant’s glass door, catching Ray’s attention as he lowered his coffee cup. Digby Green was strolling toward his truck. Ray set the cup in the console holder, and switched on the Chrysler’s engine.

They’re closing in on him! Good. He deserves to be caught. And punished. Rotten to the core!
