The Gardens of Digby Green: Burger Joint

If staying behind that truck by a vehicle or two worked as well as it did on television shows, he’d be safe enough. Traffic wasn’t too heavy, and Ray kept an eye on the green pickup. Maybe he should have driven his less conspicuous car.

No, he would confront this Digby Green. If only to learn whether when Green had left Rose’s Roses, Ray’s wife was at the store, alive. It was appropriate to track the man down using her Chrysler Imperial.

Uh oh. Better stop musing, and pay attention.

Mr. Green had turned right, into the lot of Rose’s favorite car wash. A yellow Volkswagen also turned in, but from the center lane, compelling Ray to brake. He shook his head. Some people.

Green, yellow, red. The color sequence made him chuckle, even as he steered the big vehicle into the line. He closed the car windows, then popped open the glove box to grope for a coupon, but his wife must have used the last one. Ray shrugged, and pulled out his debit card.

When the red hood of the Chrysler emerged from beneath the final blower, Green’s pickup was making a right turn to exit the lot. Ray pulled forward, as the Volkswagen veered into the left turn lane. Two Mazdas passed before the woman in the German car could merge with traffic.

Ray accelerated, turning right.

He settled his mind and kept his speed within reasonable limits, following Digby in the direction of the Interstate 80 interchange. A half mile before the highway on ramp, Digby turned into a fast food restaurant lot. When Ray reached the place, Digby was parked, and going in.

Ray chose the drive-through lane, got a burger and coffee, and pulled into a parking space just before the exit. He’d eat, and watch for Green to circle the building.

He could confront him right now, couldn’t he? He knows Digby is inside the building. If he waits, he will have to follow him again and maybe lose him!
