The Holy Spirit: a Gift from the Father and the Son
Why is the Holy Spirit a gift from the Father and the Son?
First, I believe the reason stems from God’s enjoyment of relationship.
In Eden, God walked with Adam in the evening. When Adam and Eve sinned, God called for them.
Later, Jesus took on himself human flesh and walked with his disciples through Galilee and Jerusalem. When it was time for him to return to heaven, after his resurrection, he promised not to leave his followers alone, but to send them the Holy Spirit, thus being with them to the end of the age.
Second, God the Father has sent the Holy Spirit for specific reasons:
The Holy Spirit inspired Moses to write the first five books of the Bible. The Spirit also sent God’s messages through many prophets, and granted wisdom as well as temporary authority to kings and rulers.
The Holy Spirit came down in the visible form of a dove seen by the last prophet, John the Baptist, at Jesus’ baptism, when God the Father identified His Son and announced His pleasure in him.

A dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit.
At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came to equip the disciples with boldness to preach, recall of Old Testament Scripture and the things Jesus taught them, multiple languages to witness to people outside Jerusalem and inspiration for the books of the New Testament. The Holy Spirit also gave the disciples gifts of abilities to administrate the growing church.
So what does the Holy Spirit. a gift from the Father and the Son, do for us these days?
He brings nine character-molding gifts of his own which we’ll examine in coming weeks, as well as the gifts for church administration which are still in effect until Jesus’ return.
