God’s Call Is Also Irrevocable

I’ve been blogging about God’s irrevocable gifts since October 15, 2019, however, God’s call is also irrevocable.

Do we have a clear picture of what a call is?

One place to start is Webster’s Dictionary. Call is a verb. Verbs are about action. As a verb, call has been part of the English language since before the twelfth century.

The first verb definition is this: 1. Speak in a loud voice to be heard at a distance; 2. to make a request or demand.

As a transitive verb, the definitions for call that suit the purposes of this blog are these: 1. to utter in a loud distinct voice; 2. to announce or read authoritatively; b.1 to command or request to come or be present; c. to summon to a particular activity, employment or office; d. to invite or command to meet; e. to rouse from sleep; 3. to challenge to make good on a statement; call a thing by its right name, speak frankly.

When we consider call as noun, it’s been a word in English since the fourteenth century. 1.a. It is an act of calling with the voice; 2.a. a request or command to come or assemble; 2.d. an invitation to become the minister of a church or to accept a professional appointment; 2.e. a divine vocation or strong inner prompting to a particular course of action.

So God’s call is also irrevocable. How does that apply to us?

From the sixth day the world existed, we were called to be in relationship with God, to tend the garden, to name created things, and to respond to Him. As believers in Jesus, we also have the calling to summon others into relationship with Him.
