Mariner’s Prayer

Still, O Lord, the pitch of disobedience,
Straighten the wasteful yaw of self-will
That combine to rob me of distance over ground,
Turn me from you, O rhumb route to the haven.
Despair and folly
Fetch across the distance of my ambition,
Confuse the swells of effort, fling spume of futility.
Teach me to lie ahull in your
Providence, Wave of life that purifies.
To stand aloof of temptation’s shoals,
Buoyed up on the current of your will.
To penetrate doldrums of waiting
Until the Spirit breathes direction.
That I may hoist sails of praise,
Reach—crack on, throughout the race
Until I am recorded in your log of life,
As one, rated Able, who overcame tempest,
And brought those adrift, aboard.
