Gifts? What About Them?

God’s gifts and call are irrevocable.

As a Christian, I believe the statement is true. What ideas does it contain? Let’s start with the word gift. Webster’s Dictionary informs me that gift, when used as a noun, has been with the English language since the days of Chaucer’s Middle English.
Definition
First, it’s a notable capacity, a talent, or capacity. Second, it’s something voluntarily transferred from one person to another without compensation. Third, the act, right, or power of giving.
So?
That’s concise, but it’s Dull. What does gift imply? On a day-to-day human level, behind gift is the concept of a relationship. Usually, people make, buy, or plan gifts for friends and family members. It takes altruism to make a gift to a total stranger, or even less likely, to an enemy.
In this world, the motivation behind gift-giving can range from the loving celebration of an accomplishment, to things less appealing, like a desire to manipulate or influence in a less positive sense.
One thing is sure. Gift givers deliberately use their time, talents, or money in their desire to present someone they choose to honor or love an object or experience of beauty and value.

Redwood pen set

Whether it’s a new pair of useful blue mittens or some stained glass picked for the gorgeous changes it gives to light, we hope our loved one also appreciates and enjoys the surprise we’ve planned.
It doesn’t take much effort to remember our struggles to wrap a package in Christmas or birthday paper so that there weren’t gaps that exposed the box. We wanted it to be perfect because we felt the recipient deserved it that way.
What particular gift do you remember most often? What was the occasion when you received it?
For me, one most memorable gift was the companionship of a close church friend during a sixteen-day trip to Great Britain and Ireland. If you like, leave me a comment about a favorite gift or experience you were given.
We’re fairly familiar with human perspectives on gifts, but does God have his own take on Gifts?
Over the next weeks, I’ll be exploring the possibility on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Keep in touch.

Heidi, My best gift ever was a piano, given by my sister.
I am new to this blog. Do you have samples of your books here? Where can I find them? I am interested particularly to read what you have written about sailing.

I’ve not yet had a full length novel published. You can look at some short stories/ flash fiction on the page Published works. So far, my stories with nautical bents are full length novel manuscripts. I’ll have some short stories in an anthology that hasn’t yet been released, but when it is, there’ll be a post here.

Tom, I’m seeking agent representation for my novel manuscripts, so there aren’t links to those here. However, one of my sailing-influenced poems is on the poetry page that’s been added to the menu.

Heidi, thank you for challenging me to think about the gifts I have been given. The BEST gift is hard to choose!
Aside from God’s gift of life itself, I’m going to say education, particularly my Christian school education, has been my best gift. Being a parent myself, I know how hard it was for my parents to pay the tuition bill for me and my siblings from kindergarten through high school. My dad drove a delivery truck. My mom was hardworking at home, always there for us. Dad had an eighth grade education and mom graduated from high school after the eleventh grade, having taken a short secretarial course. They determined we all would have the best education, no matter the sacrifice. I have been, and always will be, full of gratitude to them for their commitment to our learning well, and from a Christian perspective.
